It was another medical/educational mission that SANA carried out today in Abu-Samra with Medecins Sans Frontieres at their locale in Dar Al Zahra’. Accompanying SANA was trainee midwife Rita Barakat.

 

The clinic was very busy with young mothers the majority of whom were on their first pregnancy. Full assessments were carried out on the patients and they were all scanned by trainee Rita under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum. Having spent time on the simulator prior to her first outreach mission, Rita skillfully carried out the 6-Step approach and as a result, redated 28% of the patients seen.

 

There were many high risk patients seen today in need of special care and MSF’s midwife Louiis was instrumental in making all the necessary arrangements for the patients.

 

At the end of another rewarding day, the team headed back home and plans were made for the next visit DAZ…

SANA carried out its first medical/educational mission today to the Orange Nassau Governmental Hospital in Tripoli. The hospital’s maternity was recently reopened in with a young vibrant staff eager to make a difference in our community.

 

 

This collaboration was the results of the dedicated efforts of midwife Nariman Abbouchi who had heard about SANA and who has been participating in the on going course at the Lebanese University. Her dedication to her patients and to her proper training in ultrasound has made her a most perseverant SANA trainee. Today marked her first live scanning with SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum.

 

 

The team arrived to a packed clinic and was warmly greeted by Dr. Azzam Ouwaida, the medical director at the ONGH. There were many patients, some of whom waited 4 hours to be seen and they were all in their 4th to 8th months of pregnancy. They ranged in age between 19 and 37 years. It was midwife Nariman who carried out the 6-step approach and skillfully identified the biometric planes and obtained measurements on all the fetuses. As a result, 20% of the fetuses were redated today.

At the end of a most rewarding day, the team headed back home and plans were made for the next visit to the ONGH.

SANA returned to the Lebanese University today for the 6^th and final didactic session to the midwifery students.

 

The day commenced with midwifery student Riham Ghemrawi sharing her personal scanning experience this week with SANA. She had accompanied SANA to DAZ on a missinion with Medecins Sans Frontieres and excitedly told them about applying her theoretical skill and what she has learned using the SonoSim simulator

 

Subsequently the final session focused on early gestation, fetal evaluation in the first trimester at 11-14 weeks and the basics of the gynecological exam. The final examination is planned for next week…
