SANA in Dar Al Zahra with Medecins Sans Frontieres 14 February 2017

SANA returned to Abu Samra today for a medical/educational mission with Medecins Sans Frontieres at their locale in Dar Al Zahra’. Accompanying SANA was trainee midwife Riham Ghemrawi.

It was a busy Valentines’ day for the team with a packed clinic and patients who were well into their second and early third trimesters of pregnancies. Full assessments were carried out on the patients and they were all scanned by trainee Riham under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum. Having spent time on the simulator prior to her first outreach mission, Riham skillfully carried out the 6-Step approach and as a result, redated 13% of the patients seen.

SANA saw several high risk patients in need of follow up and intensified prenatal care. It was MSF’s midwife Louiis who was outstanding in making all the necessary arrangements for the patients.

At the end of another rewarding day, the team headed back home and plans were made for the next visit DAZ…

SANA Continues with its 5th Didactic Session at the Lebanese University 10 February 2017

It was back to the Lebanese University for the 5th didactic session to the midwifery students in Tripoli.

The session commenced with midwife Nariman, who has joined the group from the community, sharing with her classmates her experiences working on the simulator and how that correlates with her work as the charge nurse of the labor and delivery at a local hospital.

Today’s didactic session today was quite interactive where Reem S. Abu-Rustum presented a series of abnormal cases and the students had to recognize what was abnormal. It was stressed to them that in the future, and at this stage of their training, they are not expected to reach the correct diagnosis. However, they need to recognize that the image is not as it should be in order to ensure that the patients get referred for proper diagnosis and management. Subsequently, the sonographic assessment of twins, determining chorionicty and the key complications to anticipate and look for were covered. SANA’s utilized ISUOG Outreach’s educational slide set on Twins.

At the end of the session, the students planned next week’s observatory/hands-on days with SANA…

SANA Continues with its 4th Session at the Lebanese University 2 February 2017

On this freezing mid-winter day, all of our dedicated students showed up bright and early for our session. Only 1 student couldn’t make it. Many had come along frozen early roads…

The morning commenced with several students sharing their impressions with their colleagues as to their experiences using the SonoSim simulator. Ibtisam, Marie and Hibah discussed particular highlights with the team prior to commencing the educational session. The main topic today was recognizing normal fetal anatomy and the respective planes that are used for obtaining the biometric measurements.

Again, it was a most interactive session where a major focus was for the students to correctly determine fetal lie based on various sonographic images and the proper identification of key anatomic structures. The students were called to the board to demonstrate fetal lie and interpret various sonographic images. This was not the simplest notion for some of the students. As such, using a baby doll, the students were able to model various fetal presentations and lies in order to reach the correct answer. This turned into a game and was repeated many times until the entire class was able to arrive at the correct answer!

At the end of the session, the students planned next week’s observatory/hands-on days with SANA…

SANA Continues with its 3rd Session at the Lebanese University 19 January 2017

SANA carried out the 3rd educational session with the midwifery students. The main topic covered today was the 6-Step Approach to obstetrical sonography.

The session commenced where 6 of the students who have already worked on the SonoSim Simulator each shared a key pearl with their colleagues from their experience. Mariam, Marie, Nada, Riham, Sara and Yasmine each had a practical tip for her colleagues.

Subsequently an interactive didactic session ensued and the class was shown video clips of the 6 steps. The trainees were asked to figure out fetal lie and fetal sidedness. It was a most interesting session for all involved!

After the completion of the didactic session, Riham, Nada and Sara each had images obtained using the SonoSim Simulator on which they wanted feedback. They had saved them on their smart phones. This proved most helpful as the were critiqued on the biometric planes and caliper placement. It proved to be an amazing teaching exercise!
