SANA’s Returns to DAZ in Abu-Samra 9 August 2016 with Medecins Sans Frontieres

SANA returned to Abu-Samra today, on a hot August day, to a packed clinic at Medecins Sans Frontieres’ locale in Dar Al Zahra’. Accompanying SANA today was Rayan Ghanem, MD a second year Ob/Gyn resident at AUBMC.

 

SANA’s team had a full day where they carried out full assessments on a large number of complicated patients. In addition, all patients were scanned by Dr. Rayan under the guidance of Dr. Reem. Dr. Rayan showed impressive skill not only carrying out the ISUOG 6-step approach, but in performing a general anatomic survey. She demonstrated comfort in biometric measurements and dating the pregnancies where the team redated 12% of the patients seen.

 

As is customary, it was midwife Jinane from Medecins Sans Frontieres who was instrumental today in coordinating plans and arranging the follow ups for patients.

 

At the end of the day, SANA’s team headed back home having made plans for the next visit with MSF…

 

SANA in Aabdeh with Medecins San Frontieres 2 August 2016

SANA returned to Aabdeh today for a medical/educational mission with Medecins Sans Frontieres. Accompanying SANA was Dr. Rayan Ghanem, a second year Ob/Gyn resident at the American University of Beirut.

 

As usual, it was an inse day as SANA”s team saw a multitude of patients who ranged in age between 20 and 43 years and were in therir 3rd to 7th months of pregnancy. Full obstetrical assessments were carried out inclusive of obstetrical sonograpghy. It was Dr. Rayan who scanned the patients today, under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum, in accordance with the ISUOG 6-step approach. She assessed viablitiy, number of fetuses, placental location, amniotic fluid and presentation. In addition, she was able to obtain all the required anatomic planes and perform fetal measurements. Her skill and ability to manipulate the probe improved beautifully with each patient. The team redated 44% of the patients seen.

 

As usual, it was MSF’s Midwife Janine was ensuring all the patients got the followup and care they needed.

 

And at the end of a rewarding day, the team headed back home and the dates were set for the next visit with MSF…

 

SANA Return to Bab Al Tabbaneh with Medecins Sans Frontieres 26 July 2016

SANA returned to Bab Al Tabbaneh today for a medical and educational mission.

 

Accompanying SANA was midwife Diana Chalak who was on her first outreach mission.

 

As always, it was a busy day for SANA’s team who carried out full assessments inclusive of sonographic evaluation. It was Diana who carried out the scans under the guidance of Dr. Reem S. Abu-Rustum as she applied the 6 Step Approach to obstetrical sonography. She was able to determine presentation, viability, number of fetuses, assess amniotic fluid and placental location. She commenced with the biometric planes in order to ascertain dates. SANA redated 21% of the patients seen.

 

Several patients required follow up and care and this was all organized by the able MSF team and their superb midwife Huwaida.

 

At the end of another rewarding day, the team headed back home and plans were made for the next visit to Bab Al Tabbaneh

 

SANA Returns to Kfaribnine19 July 2016

It was a beautiful summer drive to the mountain tops of Dinnieh and specifically to Kfaribnine as SANA’s team returned today for another medical/educational mission. Accompanying SANA was trainee midwife Suha Kanawaty who has just graduated from the Lebanese University.

 

The clinic was filled with patients and as the room was being set up, SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum held an educational session with the patients addressing issues pertaining to reproductive health. It was an open discussion which generated questions from the attendees and they were all thoroughly addressed.

 

Following the session, SANA’s team carried out full assessments on the patients inclusive of sonographic evaluation. Midwife Suha scanned the patients under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum and she skillfully applied the ISUOG 6-step approach and carried out the biometric measurements in the proper planes.

 

Today’s patients ranged in age between 20 to 34 years. Most were in the 2nd to 8th month of pregnancy, 14% were  on their first pregnancy, 47% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 62% had had no prenatal care or a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far. SANA redated 36% of the patients seen.

And at the end of another rewarding day, SANA made plans for the next visit to Kfaribnine and the team headed back home and travelled amidst farmers with freshly picked peaches from whom SANA purchased its fair share and carried them back home…

 

 

 

SANA Returns to Baalbek with MSF 12 July 2016

Amidst the intense heat, SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum travelled the long roads to Baalbek for another medical/educational mission with MSF. However, for the first time, a new route was used and the trip was absolutely majestic with the beautiful scenary of the Kfradibiane mountians, a new region of the Bekaa Valley and the Temples of Baalbek all decked up for the summer festival.

 

The day commenced with the clinical portion where Dr. Huda carried out sonographic evaluation on a number of patients who were between their 5th and 8th months. She skillfully carried out the scans, obtained all biometric measurements and corrected the dates on 36% of the patients seen.

 

Subsequently, a didactic/simulation session ensued in the afternoon where Dr. Reem covered the basics of the gynecological examination with Dr. Huda. SANA’s simulator was then put to good use as Dr. Huda carried out the examination on early first trimester and gynecological patients. By the end of today’s session, she had successfully completed and demonstrated the required skill for ISUOG certification.

 

At the end of another gratifying day, plans were made for the final follow up visit with Dr. Huda late in the summer and both teams headed back home along their long respective routes…
