SANA Returns to Aabdeh with MSF 28 June 2016

SANA’s team returned back to Aabdeh today for a medical/educational mission with MSF. Accompanying SANA was midwife Hajar Hasbini.

 

The clinic was packed with patients who ranged in age between and years. Most were in the 2nd to 6th month of pregnancy. It was Hajar who carried out the scans, under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum, according to the ISUOG 6-step approach. She was able to ascertain viablitiy, number of fetuses, placental location, amniotic fluid and presentation. She then obtained all the required fetal measurements. She was able to confirm dates, and she redated 36% of the patients seen. She showed steady improvement with each scan.

 

As usual, MSF’s Midwife Janine was helping us triage the patients. She was instrumental in arranging all the necessary followup for the complicated patients.

 

And at the end of a rewarding day, the team headed back home and the dates were set for the next visit with MSF…

 

 

SANA’s Back at DAZ in Abu-Samra 23 June 2016 with MSF

SANA headed back to Abu-Samra today on a hot June day to be greeted by a full clinic at MSF’s locale in Dar Al Zahra’. Accompanying SANA today was trainee Midwife Hanan Saleh who was on her first outreach mission with SANA.

 

It was a busy day for SANA’s team who carried out full assessments inclusive of sonographic evaluations. Hanan was able to demonstrate ample skill as she scanned the patients according to the ISUOG 6-Step approach and demonstrated comfort in biometric measurements and dating the pregnancies. The team redated 24% of the patients seen.

 

As is customary, the mission would not have been accomplished without the tremendous support of the MSF team who was instrumental in coordinating plans and arranging the follow ups for patients.

 

At the end of the day, SANA’s team headed back home having made plans for the next visit with MSF…

 

SANA Returns to Bab Al Tabbaneh with MSF 7 June 2016

SANA carried out its first medical/educational mission for the Holy Month of Ramadan in Bab Al-Tabbaneh with MSF today. Accompanying SANA was Khawla Saada, a 4th year midwifery student at the Lebanese University, Tripoli.

 

It was a special day today, International Women’s Day, and SANA had a most memorable celebration. SANA’s team handed white roses to all the mothers seen in the clinic today: women who truly exemplify sacrifice and resilience… In addition, SANA’s team got to participate is a special celebratory session that the fantastic MSF team had put together where the health care providers and counselors held an open discussion with the patients to discuss their various medical and non-medical concerns and where they addressed all the patient’s questions.

 

It was an intensely packed clinic day with patients ranging in age between 15 and 36 years. As was our last impression at Bab Al Tabbaneh, the tremendous needs of the patients seen was overpowering. The team systematically evaluated all patients and it was Dr. Ghina Mahmoud who carried out the scans under the guidance of Dr. Reem S. Abu-Rustum. Her skill in applying the ISUOG 6-steps was quite impressive: she effortlessly scanned the patients, identified all the fetal structures and accurately carried out the biometric measurements. SANA redated 47% of the patients seen.

Several patients required follow up and care and this was all organized by the able MSF team…

 

At the end of another rewarding day, the team headed back home filled with images of appreciative patients and eager to continue to intensify SANA’s presence in Bab Al Tabbaneh…

 

SANA Returns to Baalbek with MSF 31 May 2016

It was another memorable day today where SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum returned to Baalbek a medical/educational mission with MSF.

 

It was a beautiful day and our roads were filled with Spring blossoms wherever one looked. After the long drive, the day commenced with a didactic session given by Dr. Reem to MSF’s Dr. Huda at the MSF Baalbek clinic. The main topic covered today wsd evaluating the fetus all through the first trimester. Dr. Huda shared with Dr. Reem her impressions as to the positive impact this training has had on her practice and showed her images of a fetus with a cardiac abnormality.

 

Subsequently, the long day commenced with Dr. Huda scanning all the patients under the guidance of Dr. Reem. All patients seen today were in the 3rd to 9th months of pregnancy.

 

Dr. Huda carried out the scans in a systematic manner and demonstrated such skill in obtaining the optimal biometric planes. In addition, the team concentrated on the importance of the 2D sweep to screen for major structural abnormalities and to obatian the basic cardiac views. As always, MSF’s midwife Rana was with the team assisting with data entry and ensuring that plans of care were taken care of.

 

At the end of another gratifying day, plans were made for the next visit and the teams headed back along their respective opposite routes back home…

 

SANA in Kfaribnine 24 May 2016

With the return of rain, SANA’s team headed back to the highest Dinnieh Mountains, to Kfaribnine. Accompanying SANA today was Midwifery Student Suha Kanawaty who is currently in her 4th year at the Lebanese University.

 

As ever, it was a most scenic route until our arrival at our the health department where the waiting room was filled with patients …

 

The day commenced by an open question session and a discussion on various aspects of well being in pregnancy. Subsequently, SANA’s team carried out full assessments on the patients. In addition, sonographic evaluation was carried and it was Suha who scanned the patient’s under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum. She  comfortably applied the ISUOG 6-step approach and was able to carry out biometric measurements in the proper planes.

 

Today’s patients ranged in age between 21 to 33 years. Most were in the 2nd to 8th month of pregnancy, 25% were  on their first pregnancy, 25% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 56% had had no prenatal care or a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far. SANA redated 12.5% of the patients seen.
