SANA in Aabdeh with MSF 17 May 2016

SANA’s team headed back to Aabdeh today for a medical/educational mission with MSF. SANA was accompanied by Khawla Saada, a 4th year midwifery student at the Lebanese University.

 

And as is customary, it was an intense day with a packed clinic. All patients today ranged in age between 17 and 41 years.

 

Khawla carried out all scans today under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum. She methodically scanned the patients, according to the ISUOG 6-step approach, ascertained viablitiy, number of fetuses, placental location, amniotic fluid and presentation. She then obtained the required biometric planes and obtained the fetal measurements in order to confirm dates and determine fetal weight. She showed marked improvement as the day progressed and redated 27% of the patients seen.

 

MSF’s Midwife Janine was instrumental in triaging the patients and helping arrange for the necessary followup on the complicated patients.

 

And at the end of a rewarding day, the team headed back home and the dates were set for the next visit with MSF…

 

SANA’s Returns DAZ with MSF 10 May 2016

SANA’s team returned to DAZ in Abu-Samra for a medical/educational in cooperation with MSF. Accompanying SANA today was trainee Midwife Jinan Hamoui who was so anxious to put her theoretical skills into practice again!

 

As is customary, it was a busy day as the team saw complicated patients and carried out sonographic evaluations. Jinan skillfully scanned the patients according to the ISUOG 6-Step approach and demonstrated comfort in biometric measurements and dating the pregnancies. The team redated 11% of the patients seen.

 

The MSF team was most helpful in the busy clinic coordinating plans and arranging for follow ups for several complicated patients.

 

At the end of the day, SANA’s team headed back home having made plans for the next visit with MSF with Midwife Jinan most eager for a future outreach trip with SANA…

 

SANA Returns to Baalbek with MSF 3 May 2016

SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum returned to Baalbek today for another medical/educational mission with MSF.

 

After the long scenic trip, the day commenced with Dr. Reem and MSF’s Dr. Huda meeting at the MSF Baalbek clinic for a didactic session. Dr. Huda shared with Dr. Reem all that she has done in the past month and the palpable benefits that she has felt in her daily practice. She particularly reported far more ease in evaluating the fetal brain, especially the posterior fossa and the cerebellum.The main topics covered in the session today was normal and abnormal fetal anatomy in the second trimester and proper identification of the biometric planes. In addition, detailed evaluation of the fetal heart was also reviewed.

 

Subsequently, the team commenced the long intense day with Dr. Huda scanning the multitude of patients who were all in the 3rd to 9th months of pregnancy.

 

Dr. Huda carried out the scans in a systematic manner under the guidance of Dr. Reem. The concentration was on obtaining the optimal planes for fetal biometric measurements. In addition, the team concentrated on obtaining the basic screening planes of the fetal heart. MSF’s midwife Rana was assisting the team today and was invaluable in helping with plans and management of the patients.

 

At the end of another most rewarding day, plans were made for the next visit and the teams headed back along their respective opposite long routes back home…

 

SANA On Its First Visit to Ain El Zeit 26 April 2016

SANA carried out its first medical/educational mission today to Ain El Ziet in coordination with World Vision International, Akkar (WVI). Accompanying SANA was Dr. Ghina Mahmoud, a 4th year Ob/Gyn resident at the Lebanese University.

 

SANA’s team met the World Vision International Team in Tal Hayat and from there they travelled along internal Akkar roads to Ain El Zeit. They were warmly greeted upon arrive to the new Municipality Building where a group of expectant moters and single girls were waiting for SANA’s team.

 

The meeting commenced with an educational session discussing all issues pertaining to reproductive health and ample time was dedicated to taking questions from the attendees. SANA’s team handed out basic guidelines to the attendees pertaining to daily feminine care.

 

Subsequently, detailed prenatal evaluation was carried out after our “exam” room was all set up: it was a mattress on the floor and SANA’s dedicated team carried all scans cross-legged on the floor! Nothing could stop Dr. Ghina as she scanned all patients and demonstrated her readiness for certification having fulfilled all ISUOG requirements. She skillfully scanned the patients who were all in their 20’s and they were in the 3rd to 8th month of pregnancy. All had 1-2 babies at home.

At the end of another rewarding day,  SANA’s team head back home aand plans were made for the next visit to the Akkar valley…

 

SANA’s Returns to Kfaribnine 19 April 2016

On a beautiful Spring day, SANA’s team headed to the glorious Dinnieh Mountains, to Kfaribnine. Accompanying SANA today, on her 4th trip, was Dr. Ghina Mahmoud, a fourth year Ob/Gyn resident at the Lebanese University.

 

The trip was filled with beautiful scenary of endless green, clear skies and bits of remaining snow on the mountain tops. The team arrived to the health department to find the patients all eagerly waiting in the hall way…

 

A general discussion with a question/answer session ensued on various matters pertaining to reproductive health and family planning. Subsequently, the patient were all evalualed in a systematic manner inclusive of screening for anemia and gestational diabetes. In addition, sonographic evaluation was carried out on all patients.  It was Dr. Ghina who skillfully scanned all patients and comfortably dated them, ascertained placental location and fetal well being. With her ever improving skill, today she was able to concentrate on optimizing the biometric palns, identify anatomy as well as carry out basic cardiac screening using the 4 chamber and 3 vessel views. She performed impeccably!

 

Today’s patients ranged in age between 25 to 35 years. Most were in the 3rd to 9th month of pregnancy, 25% were  on their first pregnancy, 50% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 38% had had no prenatal care or a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far. SANA redated 12.5% of the patients seen.
