SANA’s Second Ultrasound Course for Midwifery Students at the Lebanese University in Tripoli 7 Jan 2016

It is with much excitement that SANA returned to the Lebanese University, for the second year in a row, for the first integrated ultrasound course in Lebanon. This has been implemented into the curriculum of the 4th year midwifery students at the School of Public Health, Lebanese University, Tripoli Branch. This has been made possible with the support of Dr. Hiba Mawlawi, Dr. Fouad Ziade and Mrs. Wafa’ Krayyim who believed in the importance of this critical step, and building on the success of last year’s course.

Today’s session was an introductory session where SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum met 18 fourth year midwifery students. They were quite happy at this fomal didactic training having heard much about the course from their seniors.

The session commenced by introducing SANA Medical NGO with its mission and commitment to ultrasound education. The importance of ultrasound in medical education in general, and to our future generation of midwives in particular, was presented. The course syllabus was reviewed and the team was introduced to Abuhamad’s eBook and ISUOG’s Translated Guidelines, in English, French and Arabic, which shall serve as the main reading material for the course. The course’s didactic sessions are planned in accordance with ISUOG’s 6 Step Approach to Basic Scanning.

SANA looks forward to the next few weeks where the students will also be participating in practical sessions with SANA on its various missions…

SANA’s First Mission of 2016 at DAZ with MSF

With torrential rain, flooding roads and cold cold temperatures, SANA’s team headed to DAZ for the first medical/educational mission of 2016. The team members couldn’t help think of all the refugees to be seen who probably would look forward to the warmth of Dar Al Zahra’ in comparison to their soaking tents…

Accompanying SANA today was trainee midwife Salma Mariam who has shown unwavering dedication and commitment to her sonographic training. This mission is supposed to be Salma’s last towards fulfilling the requirements for ISUOG certification.

It was a busy intense long clinic as usual as the team saw complicated patients and carried out sonographic evaluations. Salma skillfully scanned the patients according to the ISUOG 6-Step approach and demonstrated comfort in biometric measurements and dating the pregnancies. At the end of the clinic she successfully demonstrated the practical skills required for fulfilling all requirements for ISUOG Certifications.

The MSF team was most helpful in organizing a well-managed busy clinic and in making follow up plans for several complicated patients.

At the end of the day, SANA’s team headed back home having made plans for the next visit with MSF. There was a special feeling of accomplishment to mark the New Year with trainee Salam’s success: education is the most empowering weapon and SANA was ever so proud of its newest “accomplished” trainee…

1 Dec 2015: SANA’s Last Mission at DAZ with MSF for the Year 2015

SANA returned to DAZ today for its last MSF mission for the year 2015.

It was a cold December day as SANA’s team headed to DAZ for a busy high risk clinic. The mothers today ranged in age between 16 and 35 years. The patients were in their 4th to 8th month of pregnancy. SANA’s team carried out full assessments and sonographic evaluations on the patients.

For the complicated patients in need of special care and follow up, arrangements were made with the MSF team in order to coordinate their medical care and ensure the necessary follow up.

At the end of the day, SANA and the MSF team discussed plans for 2016 and the team headed back home…

SANA in Aabdeh with MSF 24 November 2015

SANA’s team headed back to Aabdeh for a medical mission with MSF.

It was a beautiful sunny day and the clinic was packed with patients of all ages who were waiting to be cared for for their various ailments.

As usual, SANA provided comprehensive obstetrical care with sonographic evaluations to the patients who ranged in age between 14 and 41 years. The majority were in their 2nd to 9th month of pregnancy. Several had medical problems and arrangements for further care and follow up were made with the able MSF team. SANA redated 35.7% of the patients seen today.

And at the end of a rewarding day, the team headed back home having set the dates for the next visit with MSF.

SANA’s First Mission in Kfaribnine 17 November 2015

It was several months ago that SANA carried out a needs-assessment visit to Kfaribnine, in the far eastern side of the Dinnieh Mountains, at an elevation of 1150 meters. There, a new building for the local municipality has been constructed with a new health dispensary for the 45000 inhabitants of Kfaribninie.

It was a beautiful trip in the glorious Fall all the way up to Kfaribnine. SANA’s team travelled the long challenging roads and was accompanied by our enthusiastic trainee, Midwife Salma Mariam. The team was warmly welcomed upon arrival and shown around the health dispensary which was very cold but the staff graciously supplied us with heaters and made the visit most comfortable.

Despite the fact that SANA’s portable ultrasound had stopped working last week during the Tal Hayat mission, it was with the most generous support of the Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Foundation that a brand new machine was made available within a matter of days. And with much excitement, it was trainee Salma who was the first to use the new machine and showed ever so much progress in fulfilling the ISUOG 6-Step approach to scanning.

Today’s patients were all mature in their 30’s. Most were in the 2nd to 5th month of pregnancy, 66% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 100% had had no prenatal care or a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far.

SANA wishes to thank Mr. Dory Mansour and Levant ALie Houses SAL for providing all nutritional supplements today.

And at the end of a lovely day, SANA made plans for the next visit to Kfaribnine and the team headed back home…
