SANA Back in the Akkar Valley 10 November 2015

It was back to the heart of the Akkar Valley that SANA returned today with midwife Salma Mariam. The mission was carried out in cooperation with World Vision International, Akkar at the Tal Hayat Dispensary.

 

The day commenced with an educational session where SANA’s team addressed various questions and concerns from the expectant mothers. Then, detailed evaluations, inclusive of sonographic assessments were carried out where midwife Salma showed further advancement and improvement in fulfilling ISUOG’s 6 step approach to obstetrical sonography.

 

Today’s patients ranged in age between 25 and 29 years and the majority were Syrian refugees. Most were in the 2nd to 8th month of pregnancy, 50% were on their first pregnancy, 30% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 40% had had no prenatal care or a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far. SANA redated 30% of the patient’s seen.

At the end of a rewarding day, SANA’s team head back home and plans were made for the next visit to Akkar…

 

After a Long Absence, SANA Returns to Btourmaz 3 November 2015

After the longest absence, SANA’s team returned to Btourmaz today to the warm welcome of charge nurse Ghinwa who was there waiting with a large number of obstetrical patients, both Lebanese and Syrian refugees. Accompanying SANA was midwife Salma Mariam.

 

The day started with detailed examinations and with sonographic evaluations on the expectant mothers, both Lebanese and Syrian refugees, who ranged in age between 15 and 37 years. Of those 56% were on pregnancy 4 or more and 67% had had a maximum of 1 prenatal visit thus far. SANA redated 34% of the patients seen today.

 

Midwife Salma skillfully scanned the patients today and demonstrated her adaptness at carrying out the ISUOG 6-Step approach. She started obtaining the biometric measurements under the guidance of SANA’s Reem S. Abu-Rustum, MD.

 

Subsequently, an educational session was carried out on the post-partum period in general, and breast feeding in particular. This was an interactive session with many questions taken from the attendees and clarified by SANA’s team.

 

SANA expresses its sincerest appreciation to Mr. Dory Mansour and Levant Alie Houses SAL for providing the nutritional supplements.

 

And at the end of a wonderful autumn day in Btourmaz, plans were made for the next visit and SANA's team headed back home...

 

SANA Back at DAZ with MSF 27 Oct 2015

SANA returned to DAZ today with midwife Salma Mariam for a medical/training mission.

 

Despite the stormy weather, it was an intense day for SANA’s team as they took care of a multitude of expectant mothers with various medical problems who ranged in age between 16 and 35 years. The patients were in their 4th to 8th month of pregnancy. Midwife Salma demonstrated her skill as she carried out ISUOG’s 6 step approach while scanning the patients with SANA’s  Reem S. Abu-Rustum.

 

The dedicated MSF team helped coordinate all special care and follow up on the complicated patients.

 

At the end of the day, SANA made plans for the next visit with MSF and the team headed back home…

 

On a Beautiful Autumn Day, SANA Returns to Aasoun 20 Oct 2015

Amidst the cool breeze, SANA returned to the Governmental Hospital of Seer Al Dinnieh for a follow up visit with its trainees who warmly welcomed SANA…

 

The day commenced with the team sharing with SANA their accomplishments and progress over the past 2 months. In addition, SANA shared with the team the new Arabic translated ISUOG Basic Training Guideline and talked to them about the possibility for arranging a day where they can all watch the actual Basic Training Course, which just took place in Montreal. The course has been translated to French and may be accessed once it is available on the ISUOG portal.

 

Subsequently the team commenced sonographic evaluations of their obstetrical patients, and demonstrated more confidence and skill in carrying out a full exam according to the ISUOG 6 Step Approach. Even though midwife Ibtisam was post call, she skillfully demonstrated the sagittal aortic arch and descending aorta on one of the patients!

 

At the end of a wonderful day, plans were made for the next session at the GHSD and SANA headed back home with pride and fulfillment at what the team has accomplished…

 

SANA Returns to Aabdeh with MSF 6 Oct 2015

SANA carried out a medical mission today in cooperation with MSF at their locale in Aabdeh.

 

As usual, it was a busy day for SANA’s team as they took care of a multitude of patients between the ages of 19-43. SANA carried out full evaluations, inclusive of sonographic evaluations, and redated 33% of the patients seen. In addition, 20% of the patients were young brides on their first pregnancy in need of special counseling.

 

And as is the case after each of SANA’s encounters with our refugees, the mission reinforced the enormity of the medical, social and psychological crises.

 

At the end of the day, SANA made plans for the next visit with MSF and the team headed back home…
